Public

Public
Written by Kelly Ann Wilson

I wake up in a cold sweat
From nightmares at night.
They called you the life of the party
While I couldn't even look
Another human being in the eye.

Every nerve in my body lights up
When people I love and trust
Casually brush by me.
It plays over like a record in my mind
The sound of glass breaking.

I taught myself
How to cover bruises with makeup.
Oh, but I won’t say your name
In public.

it is written pretty casually, with little description, but the pain and inner turmoil is reflected very well by key phrases. I hope this is an exercise and not real life.

The most powerful reaction
of mind on mind
is transference of sight

I would rearrange a few of the lines, to make it seem more connected.
Such as:

They called you the life of the party,
I couldn't even look another human being in the eye.
Now, I wake up in a cold sweat
from nightmares in the dark.

Every nerve in my body lights up
when people I love and trust,
casually brush by me.
It plays over like a record in my mind...
the sound of glass breaking.

I taught myself
how to cover bruises with makeup
And... I won't say your name in public.
