Oduduwa

You came far from there
Not up here with bundles of chain;
And tied up yourself as you
Descended from the cloud,
Just like the god in a snow white cloth.

You walked truly the sharp desert from Mecca
Following your people
On the river- side,
You laid down for some days
All ate what they had
By their sides their idols slept always,
Through them you knew your ways,

In the desert,
You staggering and galloping,
Held close to each other
Like the hands of bamboo;
Your steps were heavy and hands weakened.
After some days, you got to Ile-Ife.
Ifes shouted baba has arrived.

Last few words:
The poem is about the father of Yorubas in Nigeria who dominate the western part of the country. There is consensus on the migration of the Oduduwa and his people from Mecca to Ile-ife. Some said he came from the cloud.
