Rain

Bright yellows and brilliant reds,
move slowly covering drooping heads.
Grey skies seem so permanent,
they never seem to clear.
The stage is set for the sky to burst,
and yet another downpour.
People moving down crowded streets.
Umbrellas plumed to cover tired heads.
The pitter patter of gentle rain.
Where rainy day people
spend their afternoons.
Enjoying the humid, misty air
When in a flash the sun bursts through
and the bow in the cloud whispers
I love you!

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet's computer artificial intelligence:

The poem "Rain" effectively uses vivid imagery to depict a rainy day scene. The use of colors in the first line, "Bright yellows and brilliant reds," sets a vibrant tone, although it is not clear what these colors are describing. The reader might benefit from more specific details to clarify this imagery.

The transition from the dreary, "Grey skies seem so permanent," to the hopeful, "When in a flash the sun bursts through," is well executed. This shift in mood mirrors the unpredictable nature of weather, which could be a metaphor for the ups and downs of life.

The final line, "and the bow in the cloud whispers I love you!" is a surprising and poignant conclusion. However, the introduction of a direct address ("I love you") might be more powerful if it were foreshadowed earlier in the poem. As it stands, it feels somewhat disconnected from the rest of the piece.

The poem could also benefit from more consistent use of rhythm and meter. Some lines, such as "The stage is set for the sky to burst," have a clear rhythm, while others, like "People moving down crowded streets," do not. Consistent use of rhythm and meter can enhance the musicality of the poem and make it more engaging to read.

Finally, the poem uses a lot of passive voice ("move slowly covering," "is set," "seem to clear," "is plumed," etc.). Active voice can make the poem feel more dynamic and immediate. For example, instead of "Umbrellas plumed to cover tired heads," consider something like "Umbrellas bloom, shielding tired heads." This not only uses active voice, but also enhances the imagery by comparing umbrellas to blooming flowers.

You've nicely captured a lovely moment. I enjoyed reading this! "Where rainy day people spend their afternoon."
My kind of people in my kind of place!
Thank you!

L. I'm learning as I emulate great poets such as yourself.
I know very little about Shakespeare and sonnets, but I feel that
I am in very good company in this forum as a student reader.

and yes! You are in very good company here with all these wonderful poets and their poems! I think a couple things to think about are imagery and movement (action) which you have achieved so well here. Again, I'm walkin' in the rain with this one!
Thank you!

Will you please explain how to enter a contest. I am very
confused with the process. I am clueless about what to do next?

I tried to get back into the submit a poem page, but since I just entered a poem, it's not letting me in. If I recall correctly, after you enter your post, there is a drop down option - I believe it's called (or something similar to) "Contest." Click on that, and the drop down contest options appear. You hover and click over the contest you want to enter and then continue to publish your poem as you have been doing. I know Geezer is pretty great with technical "stuff" if you have any further issues. Good luck with your entries!

to enter a contest, go to the heading [Contest]
click contest, then to submit a poem, or find a contest, [depending on what you would like to do.]
Find a contest will only tell you about the contest. [parameters].

To actually enter a contest, click submit, post your contest as you would any other on the stream.
Scroll down to find the contest in the section that gives the names of the contests.
Click that box and then click save and you are done! ~ Geezer.
