First Real Confession

Bless me Father for all my fears
That cursed me throughout the years

To disobey my parents was a terrible sin
To be forever guilty no matter how good I’d been

Instead of being a source of joy and peace
Confession became a guilt that would never cease

As time went by and my guilt eroded
My thoughts of forgiveness exploded

I seek within myself real sins in my mind
That cause my soul the truth to find

Bless me Father for my sins so real
That now allows my soul to heal

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet's computer artificial intelligence:

This poem, titled "First Real Confession," explores the theme of guilt, forgiveness, and self-reflection. It uses a consistent rhyming scheme, which helps to create a rhythmic flow. However, there are several areas where the poem could be improved.

Firstly, the poem could benefit from more concrete imagery. While the abstract concepts of guilt and forgiveness are powerful, they could be more impactful if grounded in specific, tangible examples. For instance, instead of stating "To disobey my parents was a terrible sin," the poem could describe a particular instance of disobedience and the resulting feelings of guilt.

Secondly, the transition from guilt to forgiveness could be more clearly delineated. The lines "As time went by and my guilt eroded / My thoughts of forgiveness exploded" suggest a sudden shift, but the process of moving from guilt to forgiveness is often gradual and complex. Expanding on this process could add depth to the poem.

Lastly, the poem could benefit from more varied sentence structure. Many lines begin with "To" or "That," which can make the poem feel repetitive. Experimenting with different sentence structures could make the poem more engaging and dynamic.

Overall, the poem effectively communicates its themes and emotions, but could be enhanced with more specific imagery, a clearer depiction of the transition from guilt to forgiveness, and varied sentence structure.

I enjoyed this, brought back a few memories, mainly of wondering what to tell the priest as I didn't believe I had committed any sins, so I used to make them up. Looking back I can see how it influenced me and how I was taught to think I was guilty before I took one step into the confessional.
Catholic guilt, an obsession created by monsters because they knew it worked, to a point. Ruby :)
