Ellada, Ellada

I had a dream the other day, it was quite vivid
Surrounded by madness in the streets of Athens
Small children begging for Euro’s from Mother Germany

Old men lit on fire to show their frustration
Trust became the wrapping paper of a gift
I could see the sobbing of wise philosophers
The religious say we lost faith in our maker
As the hope for our future is calmed by tear gas

Where are the unforgettable heroes?
The intellects behind the passion of democracy
Have they been silenced by the wolves
That fill pockets with fortunes
Leaving us to crave Plato’s theory
And the passion of Cleisthenes
The father of democracy

Ellada, Ellada, oh how I envy your adversaries
For even in your worst of days you brighten
Oh, Aegean queen, I bow at your feet

Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell(Leonard Cohen)

A very comtempary poem and dreaming of the great nation that was Greece. The example of democracy lost. The old philosophers must be turning in there grave. Like the story of Atlantis, as it was meant to be understood "the fall of a great free thinking nation" that was overtaken by pure government greed.
This is definitely one of your best writes mixing the old world with the new.
Bravo!!

LIFE ISN'T ABOUT WAITING FOR THE STORM TO PASS
IT'S ABOUT LEARNING HOW TO DANCE IN THE RAIN.

My freind democracy is a myth created by the wealthy, politicians are just buffers between those that have and have not. But your poem is worthy in it's thought and structure. Nice write. Regards Roscoe..

Roscoe Llane,

Religion will rip your faith off, and return
for the mask of disbelief that's left.

It took two world Wars and a world recession before the great Germany,
with the aid of our old favourite country France to take over Europe.
Gone the quiet days of the old Greek Philosophers and the Plato where life was at rest and would evolve into a stable realm.
Now as you say that beautiful heart of democracy has been ripped apart, shredded as an old piece of useless information.
My heart goes out to Greece, and any nation that has been shredded by the heartless machine of European New ways.
Maybe the Greek people that spread throughout the world could give something back to their Fathers nation so that they can be released from that European noose and once again set free, Yours Ian.T

PS:- Peeing against the wind springs to mind though , I am sorry to say...

There are a million reasons to believe in yourself,
So find more reasons to believe in others..

from ships at sea! that it took vast sums of fortune to build
and corruption even then was hissed at
however monuments are not nations set with stone
just the edifice like all ideologies of fortune and famine
the hard times of the eastern states would or may not
have borne a Bob Dylan as we know
The philosophers would not have been preserved
so dramatically if drama had not been the great
passion

but All great works of man eventually seem to have
their fall from their rise
the zenith may have been the once proud glory that
we marvel still The hazy humid views upon the
turpid waters now Yet the notions still prevail
secret voting was invented there or at least
put in use But it is sad to see a wounded
society that put forth so much bleeding on its
steps like a sacrifice

lessons to heed

A tremendous poem Paul for nationality and
dignity scorned and waiting with the worlds
baited breath to see what befalls us all

thank you
