The Wick

The Wick
Written by Kelly Ann Wilson

We are but a candle
With the wick already cut
We’re born and it starts burning
And that will be all the time we’ve got

At first it burns quite slowly
It’s so very fresh and new
As time goes by, we come to learn
The candle burned down as we grew

I think maybe all we can hope
As we go through our years
Is to bring some light and warmth
To the world
While we are here

I enjoyed this piece and congratulations on your deserved win. It does seem to me to be a bit of a mix between free verse and rhymed. My own personal taste is for rhymed poetry. I would take some of the words out without detracting from the sense of the piece. Once again, congratulations. Alex

I loved how you brought the image of a candle burning and compared it life ticking by. Great imagery. Kelly for the win!
