More pricks than you can count

I’ve had more pricks than you can count, I have them every day.
And when I’m due to have one more, honestly, I’m okay.
While the pricks pierce my flesh and even hurt my fingers,
Some have proved to be so sore, ahh that memory, still lingers.

At times they really hurt, but I am not complaining.
I have these pricks, because I need constantly maintaining.
And now I’ve had so many pricks, I don’t grumble at blood spurt
It’s hard at first to break your flesh and inject a little squirt.

The pricks have shrunk and are smaller, or maybe I am bigger,
I’ve got as wide as a fairground ride, and so has my fuller figure.
My doctor gave me a new prick, he’s subtle, with a smirk,
I don’t want a shorter needle, please make my pancreas work.

A prick is only scary if you don’t understand its purpose.
When I had my first, it was given by paediatric nurses.
And when I’m doing my prick, do not goggle gape or stare,
The pricks I’m injecting now are recognised self-care.

If you listen to me carefully when I stop to answer questions,
Each Type 1 is on their own and learning their own lessons.
So, if you see folks injecting meds, don’t assume that they are addicts,
What can’t be cured must be endured, these are the type 1 habits.

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Last few words:
How many of you can claim you've had this many pricks? And by the way, my husband is not impressed by this poem, whereas I like to think of it as a bit of fun.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet's computer artificial intelligence:

The poem presents a unique perspective on living with Type 1 diabetes, using the metaphor of "pricks" to represent the daily injections. The use of humor and personal experience adds a layer of relatability and understanding to the narrative.

However, the poem could benefit from a more consistent rhythm and rhyme scheme. Some lines are noticeably longer than others, disrupting the flow of the poem. For example, the second line of the third stanza is significantly longer than the rest of the lines in that stanza. The rhythm could be improved by breaking up longer lines or expanding shorter ones to match the general syllable count.

The rhyme scheme also varies throughout the poem. While the first two stanzas follow an AABB pattern, the third and fourth stanzas switch to an ABAB pattern. Consistency in the rhyme scheme would help the poem flow more smoothly and make it more pleasing to the ear.

The poem does a good job of conveying the speaker's experience and emotions, but it could benefit from more vivid and specific imagery. For example, instead of saying "I’ve got as wide as a fairground ride," the poem could describe the physical changes in more detail to create a stronger image in the reader's mind.

Lastly, the final stanza introduces a new idea - the misconception that people who inject medication are addicts. This is an important point, but it feels somewhat abrupt. The poem could introduce this idea earlier and explore it in more depth to make the conclusion more powerful.

Hello, Ruby,
A lovely bit of fun, yes. But so much more! You have educated the reader with not only the correct technical process, but also your personal experience. All with a positive frame of mind and sense of humor. Good for you in being so open in helping others understand. You and this poem are gifts! So, I'm not seeing where the AI suggests that your rhyme pattern changes, do you?
Thank you!
L

Hi Lavender, thank you for reading and your comments.
I think the Bot is pointing out the near rhymes, which I have used in the last stanza. He's more of a pedant than I am :)

I think the line in the fourth stanza is of most significance: A prick is only scary if you don’t understand its purpose.

It did take me some time to accept I had diabetes, I was a kid when I was diagnosed. It's given me a personal strength I think I would have otherwise not have had. Ruby :) xx

Almost like reading the script of a Carry on Film. Full of Double Entendres. Chuckle chuckle. Alex

Thanks Alex, I'm glad it made you chuckle, I like to chuckle too. Ruby :)

Thank you Mark, I much appreciate your comments. I wrote it last year and have had it in cold storage along with my bad habits and swear words, ha ha.
If you are doing the lancing or a medical professional is doing it, don't prick your finger in the centre of your pad, use the sides/edges. It is less painful, I promise. Ruby :)

diabetic, but only pricks her fingers when she is feeling particularly bad, to get a quick read on her blood sugar; but I know she doesn't like doing it. It must be a real pain in the finger! Okay, okay... As Mark says, I have never seen a poem dedicated to this subject and I'm sure that there are probably fewer that a couple in this whole world. Glad to have a piece written about it at last. LoL

Hi Geezer, does she have a libre? I've had one for about four years now, they sit on your arm, of course it is another prick but sugar levels are measured by interstatial fluid. They last for 14 days and I take my measurements with a reader but they can be done with a smart phone if you download the app. Still have to have the pricks by injections but the Libre makes it easier to get better control.
Here's the link to the UK version but they have them in the USA too. https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/home.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2b6A3eOpg...

has pretty good control; she eats pretty much whatever she likes and as long as she takes her med, [whatever it is]
doesn't worry about it unless she feels bad. I respect that decision and it seems to work for her. I am impressed with the finesse you exhibit here. Nicely done, ~ Geezer.

under fairly good control and have added some things back into my diet. I used to test a ridiculous amount of times a day but now only when I feel like I need it. Testing is definitely no fun especially when you type all day long. Another excellent write! Thank you for sharing your personal experience as well as providing education.

Hi Rose, type 2 is as difficult as type 1 but I have the option of adjusting my insulin if I go high. Starange that isn't it, most people would mean get high by taking drugs, it's different for us. :)

There's a few things I don't eat anymore but I'm fine with most food as I carb count for what I eat.
I only eat pasta if I cook it 24 hours before I plan to eat it, and reheat it in the sauce. This reduces the spike in blood sugar. And I use white frozen bread for toast, this also helps to keep my levels steady.
Diabetes has always been a learning curve.
Take care, hope you are well? Ruby :) xx

I do well with wheat wraps, bread or even multigrain. I stay away from white bread etc. I tried force feeding myself vegetables etc and I am just not that person so I have to find ways to get my veggies in so that I can eat them without any problems. Pasta I do in moderation because it is my favorite...I use a sugar free sauce and add in meatballs for protein which helps balance. I also sprinkle mozzarella cheese on it as well. I was eating a lot of chicken and now I am chickened out. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

of V-8 juice! I eat plenty of veggies, so I don't really need it, but I enjoy it now and again. Especially with a double shot of vodka! LoL
