craps shoot at thought café

craps shoot at thought café

in backroom
at the thought café
game of craps
was ongoing for as long
as I recall.

most of the regulars
were there with
their money folded
long ways between
middle and ring fingers.

action was a little
slow, and regulars
were looking for new
meat.

they looked my way,
and I shook my head, no
and said, “I don’t gamble.”

“why are you smoking that
damn pipe and drinking
cabernet?” they asked.

“we all pick our poisons,”
I replied. “yours is booze,
blow, smack, and cigarettes,” I
rejoined further.

at that moment a man came
out of the head with a
tourniquet still wrapped
round his arm, sleeve still
rolled up, a drop of blood
oozing from the hole in his vein
where he fixed himself,

unsteady on
his feet as he leaned
back into the game.
all were silent,
gazing at the rivulet
of blood, now almost to
his wrist.
I shook my head,
lit my pipe, and ordered
another glass of wine,

turned to the junkie craps
shooter with a look
of benevolence, emptied
my glass, and walked towards
the exit.

on the street I looked
up at the marquee.

in staccato neon
flashed the words --
thought café.
i wondered who named
the place.

as I walked on down
the road,
the man wearing the
tourniquet
rolled snake eyes,
turned up his toes
and died.

he thought he was
going to win the pot
after his hot shot.

that's what you get
for thinking
at the thought
café.

Can the thought be separated from the thinker?

Hmmm.

Reminds me of a shoot out at the ok corral. Bang you're dead. Are you ok with that? lol.

Fucking great poem, Victor! Nary a word to edit. ;-)

Anna,

Actually, I just read a recount of the Shootout at the OK Corral in a book by Bruce Olds called "Bucking the Tiger" (wish we could underline things here). It is an historical novel about John Henry "Doc" Holliday. I highly recommend this book, but do have a dictionary handy, as Mr. Olds has a dandy of a vocabulary.

As far as the thought being separated from the thinker -- I don't 'think' it's possible -- since the neural pathways from whence the thought/s came/come belong to the thinker alone.

Thank you, Anna.

Love,

Victor

I'm not entirely sure about the thought thingy, Victor. From where do thoughts originate? Especially ones we've never thought before.

Must be a moment of absolute silence and clarity. The moment of nonduality when the thought and the thinker are one and the same but not really. Ecstasy happens..

Love.

Anna,

Let me put it like this: Until I was around 20, I was given my thoughts to think by those who wished to mold me according to their whims, then I began to think for myself, and it was ecstasy~! The cumulative thoughts of all the people from everywhere often enter our minds and are entertained there with perusals of our own, and once in awhile we come up with an original. Interesting idea, and I will continue this titillating debate with you as long as you wish.

I love you, my dear.
