ODD COMPANIONS

Each year when summer heat abates
and frost turns forests red and gold
I know a familiar friend awaits,
a white haired guy who's beyond old.

He often joins me in some task,
like feeding cows or cutting wood,
he's there regardless if I ask.
Sometimes we walk the woods and brood.

Or we might sit before a warm hearth fire
and talk about the simple life,
the peace which all just men desire,
the precious love of a good wife.

We both have moved around a bit,
he a good bit more than I,
and both have formed the bad habit
of staring at cloud scudded sky.

He'a an adopted son of Yankee Land
and in writing he might tend toward terse
in the manner of New England
when he wrote immortal verse.

and I am born of the deep south,
a mere scribbler at writing poetry,
who tends too much to run my mouth
when writing of this hill country.

We are a most unlikely pair,
him white-haired, spare; me bald and stout,
me from down here, him way up there.
What ever do we talk about?

Children,flowers,streams. old trees,
satisfaction of a job well done,
the bracing nip of a chill breeze,
the rise and set of winter's sun.

One day I'll really meet my friend
who's here although he has long crossed
and when my time here comes to end
I'll compare notes with Robert Frost.

I expected nothing less from you and was not disappointed. This has such a dream quality as is all of your writing very soothing. I like the subtle way you introduced us to Mr, Frost

Yes it is exactly what I had in mind

Chrys
Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell(Leonard Cohen)

Sometimes a person is defined almost as much by what he isn't as what he is. I figured contrasting this great master with a mere scribbler might be such a time. I'm pleased it worked for you........stan

we were supposed to write a bit of a bibliography....
I didn't really learn much about the life of Frost... but Chrys seems happy with it so....

I like the write, and even MM only turned her toes up at only a couple of verses

Nicely sentimental...

shall draw the Thing as he sees It, for the God of Things as They are.'

Perhaps I should also put it on stream? Chrys?............stan PS this is what I get for being in a rush to catch up from being gone in middle of shop

ICE CREAM
AND ice cubes more less whiskey
and more snow in wine
believe me
put a few stones white
in wine and see
how it cools
even heats you up
when you want to

drinking needs experience
and a beer won't teach you
two Scotches every now and then will do
have a martini
may be
for me wine
would only do

I have been coast to coast but never north of the Mason Dixon line. But I do have a trip planned to the great lakes states then onward to the northern plains and rocky mtns. We'll then cross over to California and come back via the desert states. New England would be nice but it's almost impossible to get there without going through those big northern cities which I have no desire to do......stan
