Rugby... [Your Best -April contest]

Rugby! No... I am Lobo the winter wolf.
Sitting in the yard, cold wind whipping flakes of snow through my fur.

Rugby! No... I am the Shadow under your feet, as you shine on my universe.

Rugby! No... I am the Protector, always on guard against anything that comes between us.

Rugby! No... I am the Stomach, part of your disgestive system, your dinner, supper companion.

Rugby! No... I am the Doorman, tongue hanging out like a hand. Where is my tip? My Beggin' Treat?

Rugby! Daddy is home, where are you? I am here, in your heart forever and always...

the right conclusion. Rugby has been gone for quite a while. He had a brain tumor that was inoperable by the time it was noticed and had to be put down. He developed tremors and the gradual loss of his hind legs and then the seizures started. I was at work one night, when my wife called and told me that he was having grand mal seizures one after the other and I should come home right away. I took him to the vet and we decided that it was time. I held him in my arms and told him that we were going to get a burger and everything was going to be alright, while the vet gave him the shot. Yes, he is always with me, I have his ashes in a box along with his collar [which he hated having removed; even for the short time when he was bathed] his favorite toy and a Beggin' Strip, for which he would walk on water, stride through fire and climb any mountain.
Thirteen years old, he was like one of my children. Hell, he was one of my children! Please forgive the tear-stains on the page and thank you for your thoughtful comments, ~ Geezer.

I wrote this on paper first, and the paper is yellowed and brittle now, bu the tear stains show plainly. I tear up each time I read it! Thank you both, for the high praise. I guess most dog owners have at least a couple that were really special and he certainly was that! Geez.

Dear Geez. your poem is a wonderful and sad tribute to your beloved dog Rugby. I'm glad you keep his ashes in a box, as well as his collar, his toys and the Beggin' Strip. Don't know what it is, but never mind.
I once had to have a vet put my darling dog Cheetah to sleep. She'd been hit by a car and her hip was shattered. I cared for her at home for about a month, but finally the vet said her case was hopeless.
I hugged her and cried, but did not have the fortitude to watch the end. I'm afraid I shut myself in my bedroom. My son and late husband stayed with her.
So I emphasize with you a lot, your poem has brought back many sad memories and I'm also dropping tears on this page.

shaped like a strip of bacon and rather tasty to a dog, I guess; [never had the courage to taste one]. I guess that there is a fair amount of salt and preservatives in them and it is mummified. ! LoL ~ Geez.

one after that, a Beagle and I had to find a new home for her after six years. My wife and I had to move and at the time, housing here was at a premium; so I gave her to really nice couple that was looking for a companion to their Yorkshire Terrier.
Now I live in a place where there are no dogs allowed. [ the only reason I gave her up]. I would still love to have a dog, but think that I probably won't move again as my wife and I aren't fit enough to move.. ~ Geez.
