Love and Grief

I met a man who just lost his wife
His grief he could not hide
I sat with him while he wept
Through his tears, he kept asking why

As he wiped his eyes,
He looked at me and said,
"Mother Nature's made a mistake, she forgot to wait"
"The husband should always get to say goodbye"

I watched him walk away
And thought how it must feel
To be loved and to love so much
That you can't live without

We ran into each other again
And it was a much better day
He was no longer sad that she was gone
But glad for the time he had her here

Hi, Rose,
In your tender poem, the husband didn't get to say goodbye, compounding his grief and suffering. It takes time to travel through all the different feelings and emotions. Your final stanza offers gratefulness and hope, and a step toward inner peace.
Thank you,
L

I’ve been super busy and I haven’t been reading enough. I apologize for that. This is really very good. Being hopelessly entangled in love with another human is both the most uplifting and frightening thing I have every experienced. To experience that loss is a thing I cannot imagine. Very sentimental poem here. Nice work.

I work part time in an assisted living facility and one of the residents lost his wife last week. They had lived together in the facility until she fell and was placed elsewhere. I sat with him over the weekend as he explained that he didn't get to say goodbye. Mother nature had made a mistake and didn't wait for him to get there. I had watched them before she went to the other facility and he was so careful with her and gentle. Their love is truly amazing.

This must be the place, 'cause there ain't no place like this place anywhere near this place.

It really did effect me. To love someone that much and for her, to be loved that much. They were really a sweet couple and she is missed by many. He is having better days but the pain of not being there is still fresh. I can only hope to be loved that much some day.

Some of us find our soulmate in this life. And some of us don't.

If I have to live a thousand lives to find mine it will have been worth the pain of the wait.

This is so poignant. You made me think of my Dad when Mum died. He was so lost she had been his wife for 39yrs they would have been married 40yrs the year she died. Mum died young she was only 59, as you'd know I lost Dad last year in May

This really did effect me. He was so broken not because she had passed but because she didn't wait for him to get there. Such a sweet couple!

That's so sad, sometimes no matter how much their soul wants to say goodbye the body just doesn't hold on long enough. I was blessed with my Dad I got to be there at the end, Mum though? I lived 5hrs away, it may as well have been 500hrs I never would have made it home. She was gone in less than a second. That was the only blessing, she didn't suffer.

you have captured the couples love so beautifully. I hope to go first, because I think he is stronger than me. and I know I couldn't bear the loss of him, anything but that...
