Leaving

I heard them
before I saw them -
the rich, rolling chatter
of perhaps two hundred
Sandhill Cranes
so high above my gaze,
I got lost along the way.

I imagine I will find myself,
someday,
drifting among the heavens,
following the instinct,
the intuition to know
when to stay and
when to simply fly.

I really like this and it reminds me of another you posted. You have great observations and a talent for conveying a moment like this to words. I think this speaks to me because I’ve had similar thoughts. I’ve said often if I’m reincarnated I’d like to live a life as a Red Tailed Hawk. They sit upon the trees and squat cedar along the interstate in stoic cold freedom.

I, too, believe I'd like to return as a bird - Red Tailed Hawk would be glorious. This piece is also about knowing when to leave behind what no longer suites you, or is no longer best for you.
Thank you very much!

What was your inspiration for this write? it is very beautiful... there is no physical activity I like better than flying! it may sound strange, but when I meditate to get to sleep, I come to a state between sleep and dreaming. in this state of being I leave my body and fly.

excellent poem!

The image of soaring or flying can definitely help meditation. I usually hear the cranes and then search the skies for them, always amazed with how extraordinary they are. Watching them puts me in a melancholy mood. They are beautiful creatures!
Thank you!
