The Girl on The Bench: An Internal Dialogue

You see that girl there
On the wooden chair, looking into her cup?
Do you know what she’s been through
Why she’s looking so down and so fed up?
You see that man there?
Next to the girl, he won’t give in
He’s trying to help, but the chances are slim.
Do you know what I’m saying?
It’s the thought that counts
It’s the right thing to do
Not a slight bit of doubt.
Do you see what’s in front
Of your eyes? I’ll be blunt:
I’m trying to tell you
That you should also be there
To help the girl on that chair.
You don’t know this girls name
But you see she’s in pain
So go, and try to help her.
I’m the voice in your head
That says do right
So go and give her some hope
In her trauma-filled life, then she’ll cope
All this girl wants, is a blanket of comfort
Your words will keep her warm.
So, give her the words, that she can absorb.
Her thirst for life will be quenched.
Do the right thing, talk with her now
Help, the girl on the bench.

Last few words:
It's about doing the right thing. And making the right decision when u know what the right thing is. A conflict between what you should do and what you may not do. dilemmas - to be selfish or not to be!

Hello, Michael,
I like your title - many people do have this inner dialogue they bounce back and forth. Everyone has a story, and a little comfort goes along way, as your poem suggests.
Thank you,
L

You do what you can I believe. I want to do more sometimes. I know that I’ve helped more than I’ve hurt and I guess that’s probably all anyone can ask of anyone else. You can’t save the whole world and if you try you’ll get burned out pretty quickly. You still have to try helping out when it’s within your power. It is hard to know when that is sometimes.

But also to help others helps yourself. So in theory the more you help others, the better you fare yourself. So it can be both selfish and selfless at the same time. So, yeah, can't help the whole world but obviously not gonna take that literally, but I presume you mean many people as opposed to just one! I'm not suggesting for one second that I think it's right to help others in order to help yourself. It's just inadvertently a fortunate benefit to do so.
