FEBRUARY CONTEST : COVID ONE NINER -A YEAR AND A LIFETIME LATER

The ICU staff were weary
‘nother patient
had met her maker
no rest*****no rest*****no rest

stepping over the floor’s detritus
of a cardiac arrest
resulting from a respiratory
death

no rest*****no rest*****no rest
Paula had been beyond sad
somehow her friends, her best
were distant****had all but disappeared

a thousand million Paulas existed
and a thousand million Kens too
threat of infection misted
both Ken and Paula always seemed to be blue

watching comedy somehow made it
bearable, Dr Weknowsdis
said it so well in a comedic bit:
“We know we could not have done this worse.”

Many a truck with
the frozen boxes loaded with vaccine
late deliveries were no bliss
half a million deaths in our country seen.

Our heroes of this calamity born
still all too easy to forget
while standing by the graves to mourn
we will always be in their debt

no rest*****no rest*****no rest
firemen, ambulance personnel
truck and ups drivers too passed the test
by showing up and ringing the bell

and yet it may last another year
still there are those that won’t wear a mask
despite those warnings from the seer'
these that make others sick need to be taken to task

it’s said that there are
only two types of people
in this,
our pandemic

those that die
that hadn’t a clue
and those that survive
having fought for their life.

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Review Request (Direction):
What did you think of my title?
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
Is the internal logic consistent?
Last few words:
This is the most recent of the COVID ONE NINER series. It seems to me that there will be no shortage of further poems on this subject as well.

background showing through here. I'll bet that you still have a CB radio hanging around in your closet or maybe even in your car or truck. I felt that the transition from the hospital to the delivery of vaccine, was done well and the honors of the people on the front-lines, pays tribute to them in a great way. The rebuke of the ones who will not concede that this is a real and deadly situation; by not wearing a mask, is one that needs to be done all over the world. Those only thinking of themselves until the pandemic takes away a loved one, will blame everyone and everything other than themselves. Too bad they cannot accept their behavior has much to do with the end result. I like the [no rest*****no rest******no rest], it makes it sound like a bell or siren announcing the heroes. Only crit. is the [seers']. Excellent! ~ Geez.

I had a CB radio once, like 25 years ago. Not now, however I do have a shortwave.

I wanted to show the less than obvious support people as heros too, hence the naming of both truck and ups drivers.

Dr Weknowsdis is a really good Saturday Night Live bit, that had me laughing until I had tears in my eyes. Genuinely funny! here's the link: https://youtu.be/vHdT73SbS2M

I did some edits just now...

Not much difference between CB and shortwave other than the wave-length. Yes, there are the less obvious heroes and those we don't hear of, I agree. UPS and truck drivers! How much worse this whole thing could and would be without them!
I remember the Dr. Weknowsdis bit and found it really funny. Great stuff! ~ Geez.

Hi, Ray,
You've done a great job expressing the frustration of this pandemic, and the gratitude for the heroes who have made our lives easier in so many ways. Your poem is visually effective and your title is unfortunately, sadly perfect.
Good luck in the contest!
Thank you!
L

There are such great writers here, i actually only enter a contest ‘cause I’m compelled to, not ‘cause I have any expectations to winning. My stuff is generally too intense...

This virus has likely led to permanent changes in how we interact with others. I agree wit Ted about the stanza about not being able to do it worse.I kept expecting a line about final rest after all the "no rest" lines.......

My initial write was actually much longer in my head... I trimmed down to what i thought might promote the images of the continuing pandemic. Your suggestion of some final rest are interesting, glad you thought of that. Maybe in next one...

Very vivid imagery throughout. And I very much like the no rest line, it's rings so true. It's a time that no one would envy the medical staff at all.
Thank you for sharing.

Congrats Ray! This was an excellent summary of so many of our experiences during this horrible pandemic; and especially health care workers I know personally - stay well!

Best

Michael Anthony
