DAY OF SPIRITS

Softly, softly through the wood
where I've walked so oft before;
chimneys show where homes once stood
far in at the river's shore.

Dense pines stand where crops once grew
their tall trunks all in ordered lines
crowns almost obscuring skies of blue.
They shade out all but climbing vines.

And here some pilings still remain
all that's left of an old covered bridge
which will never span its course again
here at the tail of a long ridge.

Its road remains on this near side
though saplings now grow in its crown
telling the tale of time's slow tide
how its passing won't ever slow down.

Now days this path is used by game
yet memory tells how cattle made it
through topography which stays the same
as back when old legs still were fit.

The ghosts of the past accompany me
sometimes so much they block the view
but once in a while I still can see
people who remind me that I'm a ghost too.

a stunning look out how time changes, but memory keeps us fixed in time past. "i'm a ghost too." this was a very nice, visual read.

I was beginning to think something was seriously wrong with this poem lol. I am pleased you see the absence of the "I am a ghost too" which I meant to be able to be taken literally or as a metaphor. Appreciate your dropping by......stan

A beaut of a poem that appeals to me as this is of those you know are there but the eyes just cannot see.
We believe in what you call ghosts, they now live on another plain..
Have a safe journey in these days of sickness, Take care and try to stay at home for quite a while,
Yours as always Ian ..

I am fortunate to reside in a state where the virus exists but isn't killing on a large scale. As to poem, yep there is another plane where we go after we leave this one. You stay out of the big cities until covid dies out

we rarely go out now and have been in lock down for near a month now .. As we are old ones we is on the danger list,
Our daughter shops for us and I have a always kept a supply of food here.
Two freezers one fridge and a big metal cupboard outside in the outhouse apart from the normal cupboards in the house. I have always kept a good backup supply of things a habit from the forces.
When we use something I buy another lol,
You stay in sight of the aspens there where you both live and NO city places.
Take care, My Bru, love to you both as always,
Yours Ian ..

OUTHOUSE!!! This is what we call an outdoor toilet over here. Not the most sanitary place to store food. We call a storage building which is not attached to the house an outbuilding......I keep on seeing you sitting out there in the outhouse eating a snack and just staying set down until you process it lol

If you is hungry you will eat anything lol I forgot about the tortured English you sometimes use.
When I was a child we had a thunder box down the garden and lots of other things, the bath hanging on the kitchen door a meat safe on the wall outside. Glad it made you laugh I have to go empty the guzunders from last night LOL,
Youyrs as always Ian ..
