The American Dream

My body my choice,
When it’s convenient for you.
When masks make you a little sweaty,
When a vaccine is to far.
My body my choice,
When something makes you uncomfortable.

All lives matter,
Until a black man wears a hood.
All lives matter,
Until a little boy is gay.
All lives matter,
But the unborn are more important.

Guns are a right.
Little kids may die,
But don’t you dare tread on me.
Guns are my right,
To protect my life,
Even though 45,000 were lost in 2020.

Freedom of religion,
Unless you wear a hijab.
Freedom of religion,
Only if you believe in Jesus Christ.
Freedom of religion,
Until I get uncomfortable.

Why is it so hard to let people be.
To speak freely,
With equal opportunity.
None of us chose to be here,
So why are we so quick to make misery.

Land of the free and home of the brave.
But not the land of choice, or expression.
God bless America,
But what happened to the separation of church and state.
Love your neighbor as thy self,
Well as long as you look like me.

When did red, white, and blue become
Red vs. blue
And as long as you’re white you’re safe.

When did diversity become inappropriate.
Why is it not okay to say gay.
Why do we shame the ones who don’t look the same as me and you.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
What happened to these unalienable rights.
Why do 9 people have the power to take all of that away.

We grew up saying,
With liberty and justice for all.
When really it should’ve been,
With liberty and justice,
For all white men.
As long as you aren’t gay of course.

What happened to the American dream.
What happened to letting you be you, and I’ll be me.
What happened to diversity is our greatest strength.
Why did politics have to become a game.

Why do we call each other names,
Thought we got in trouble for that in second grade.
Since when did little kids become the example our leaders should be.

Why can’t love be love.
Why can’t we just let each other be.

Let their body, be their choice.
Lets stick up for our brothers and sisters who are hurting.
Let us not compare a uniform to skin color.
Lets celebrate love in all the colors it comes in.

Let us have conversations, where both parties listen.
Let us not fight to have the last word, the last law.
Let us re imagine the American dream,
Hand in hand, with you being you,
And me being me.

I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back

How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
Is the internal logic consistent?

With everything going on, this is what's going on inside my brain

This is good stuff!
I really like this. I see very few things that need addressing.

1] When a vaccine is [too] far.

2] I would like to see question-marks with questions, [maybe one every few questions so
that it doesn't look like a hook convention.]

3] Well[,] as long as you look like me.

All-in-all, a great poem asking very valid questions and making very valid points!

There is value to commenting and critique, tell us how you feel about our work.
This must be the place, 'cause there ain't no place like this place anywhere near this place.

finally a straight forward honest piece. We are all sons & daughters of our own existence, let us decide what WE want not what THEY want.

No prejudice, I don't see a woman, I don't see an unvaccinated person, I don't see a colour...I see a human living out their own personal experience. Good for them, good for me...let's just live together in harmony.

Enjoyed, & Gee has picked out the minor changes that would help tidy it up...but that said it's your poem, your choice.
