common dreams, alienations

i.

we had a common dream once
to know the sky and sea as well as
the black willow's reflection inside a mirrored lake,
but rose petals and fireballs fell and
disturbed our vision

we became stories and story-tellers then
and wrote tales of the red wake: long boats we sent
into the sunset, arms folded
across our chest, we were warriors and hunters then
and we gathered our wits and put ourselves through
the test, women with rough hands and men with
fevered brows forged the steel of our denials
with the alchemy of misunderstanding,
fusing the native in our soul to earth

it began with cave paintings we never knew
and sacrificed time further than our history
standing upright we hurled ancestors
across our imagination
to speak in metaphors and to chain
aliens to nations for as long as we will to remember,
disaffecting shrouds we bury with broken vessels,
like flies in amber

ii.

yet even the horse learns
not to stand behind the cart, lest all our trifles
vanish into dust as they must and history repeat itself
in the genes of our exploration and the corruption of
exploitation

the human mind in all its incarnation will always separate heaven from hell
and damn its circumstantial evidence
like a blade runner across fields of grass we crush no final victory
to our breast..
like a monsoon of human emotions that declared our arrival,
seeping into a majestic sky,

dawn comes and no one remains to see the world we leave behind
no one remembers burning through the dust of vision like gods we
have conquered;
the gods we have prayed to
finally rest

iii

each ending is a beginning in the land we have yet to see,
it is the heart of destiny that bears it all
triumphs when all is lost.
