IN EGYPT

The land of pyramids
and ancient civilization
a contrasting country
....of floods and desert
....stability and strife
....tolerance and dogma

The place of Pharoahs
and strong leaders

Blows now the winds of change

Where a wise Sadat made peace
and was murdered for it
where Mubarak brought stability
thus allowing democracy's growth
amid neighboring dictators
....kings
....theocracies
....and anarchy

Is this to be the last strong man ?
hoisted by the freedom he nurtured
into this sprout

Time shall be the final judge
but let us hope
democracy is not stolen
by fanatics

A political poem - that can be like a loaded gun. It's definitely clear where you stand on the issue. ;-) My question is if he won by 80 percent of the votes - why are the remaining 20 percent able to cause this sort of chaos? Something smells fishy to me. Plus remaining in power for about 30 years? I'd say it's time for a change.

My stand is that Egypt under a theocratic rule would be a disaster. Mubarak is no saint by any means and he has now agreed to not run for re-election. To let mob rule determine the next government is too similar to what happened in Iran and we all know how well that has turned out. Change is fine as long as it's done in an orderly manner...................scribbler

I agree that it must be done in an orderly manner. The problem is - how is that to be achieved in such a way that people don't feel that it has been tainted by the former ruler.

the trick isn't it ? In a region where democracy is only a word and which has a long history of strong man rule, this is a real problem. I guess we can just hope for the best and prepare for the worst..................stan

Thanks for the poem, Scribe. I was considering writing one, but thought I'd wait for it to play out some more. Yesterday I was watching the live streaming AlJazeera news (I posted a link) most of the day. For over a week peaceful demonstrations numbering in the tens if not hundreds of thousands until busloads of pro-Mubara k entered. I wonder who paid them? Now it's devolved. Thankfully, the military has not yet intervened.

It happens here in the states too, as friends who attended Washing DC protests can attest to. Paid instigators.

A developing story. Tunisia begat the fire. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-02-02/tunisian-interior-minister-s...

And the flame caught on in Egypt, http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/41376870/ns/business-eye_on_the_economy/

"Government corruption — cited by Egyptian protestors as a catalyst for upheaval — also varies widely in the region. Gulf oil countries like Oman and the United Arab Emirates score relatively well on corruption, while Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Iran, Lebanon and Syria are considered the most corrupt, according to Transparency International, which ranks Middle Eastern countries based on expert opinions and surveys."

Corruption is never good. My hope is that this movement is not hijacked by muslim extremists...............scribbler

I doubt it Scribe. Too many young educated folks.. Did you notice all the female presence, female voices??? That would never happen in extreme Muslim countries. Egypt is wayyy too moderate, and democracy is what the uprising is all about, rather than corruption and
savage tyrannical leadership.

IMO, extremism is predominate where there is little education, the sexes are separated and the females are subjugated.

I hope you're right

THERE MUST BE MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Mobs are the eyes and ears
of secret cowards
of the human kind
who throw kerosine from behind
lets see which way
goes Egypt
hold on just for a while
Lets pray
Today,
for a bettter day

I guess it will come down to which way their army swings its power. Good to see you as always..........................stan
