Austral Dreamer

From Byron bay to Broome on rolling russet plains
beauty shine’s the Kimberly when the northern territory rains
My heart will always weep when the scent of wattle’s lost
gum trees out of sight my world lays unembossed

Kookaburra laughs as dawn lights us with grace
we really love to giggle even wearing egg on face
our words are sometimes drawled but wait theres a but
when we get excited is when things start heating up

In Pub’s and RSL’s your bound to meet good blokes
even cheeky sheilas who don’t mind a dirty joke
at everything we do we strive to reach the stars
even when we’re older and writing our memoirs

A country mixed in color of every different race
But every one of us Is a heartbeat of this place
creative souls are we building from red soil
everything we have was made from honest spoils

Kooris and the white folk get along alright
but sometimes when they drink they start aground to fight
the old men roar with laughter the ladies are aghast
publican runs yelling hes red enough to blast

Eucalypt and kangaroos are some of our trademarks
if you want to see real beauties our forests cant be past
mountain streams and waterfalls we really have it all
even in a snowfall we’ve had a bloody ball

Whiteness lines our shores kissed with foamy waves
lining round our border is a multitude of caves
rain-forest glistens plants are rich with life
I really hate to see them get in global strife

Cyclones rage our shores fire our summer nights
beauty rests within our hearts and red-gum minds
no different are our faces in this far-reaching world
but because a youthful land we are we’ve bowed our heads to toil

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Last few words:
Today is Australia day and this is my poem for the occasion. BTW my cousin is Koori and I ran it past him and wanted to not be culturally insensitive but his words were. "It's bloody true"

I don't understand the (?) in paragraph 2 line 4. what are ASL's? I like the storytelling mode. it flows well and the language usage is a little bit unusual. I like learning new things, and I am interested in Australia. by the way, happy Australia Day. too bad about the cyclones and their destruction. in the mid west of the USA we have tornadoes. thanks for giving us this informational poem.

p.s.
have you seen the movie Australia it has actors: Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidmen in it?

Omg I don't know where the hell that ? come from. That's so weird it wasn't in my final draft. Got me puzzled. RSL's are returned servicemen/women Clubs here in Australia you can go have drink, meal, game of pool or snooker they also have bingo etc. It's mainly to support returned service peoples and local charities. My grandfather founded the branch in his town after WW2. But I believe I'd have to double check they were created after WW1.

I love that movie and it's very much like it was in those days. From what the older generation have said.

I have Koori blood, I am Biripi tribe. I have the insight to two different worlds. I know there will always be children treated badly but if you look at how things are today? Alcohol and domestic violence is the new enemy to young Koori kids. I am not full blood hence I showed this to my cousin and he is the greenkeeper at our local RSL actually. There is huge debate in our country over Australia Day. I'm actually of two minds. I have the views of two different worlds.

I wish there was a day we could celebrate as one again.

I just wish they'd change the date of Australia Day it brings nothing but division these days. Something which we don't need. There are so many who remember the days when we a got together and celebrated our country together. There was always a tiny element that were against it but with time and disinformation I believe it's just creating problems where there need not be any. Why can't we just celebrate like other countries without this divide among us. It's sad and it is what it is times have changed and yeah. Enough said.

I lived in Byron Bay for a while in the 90's. It's another world there but they've spoilt it with commercialisation, though it's still a beautiful place the rich and famous have taken root in the area and it's become very different from when it was a small beach town. To a now world famous holiday destination...

I tried to celebrate what we are with a little local flavour. I was born in the country and it's where my heart will rest

It's harder than you'd think. To find a compromise somewhere in the middle to be half of anything is to never be truly whole, in one world I can speak of that world, in the other the oral traditions passed down are secret and must remain so, I sometimes slip little inklings in my poems but not once has anyone caught them so I feel safe that in my obscurity I've not broken tradition.

Thanks for your kind words

P.s. I don't watch much TV and so haven't seen the series you speak of

Realistically, despite history, we are all intelligent enough to make this place work fairly well for everyone. I can’t for the life of me figure out what exactly is the deal with like half the planet.

Well done as usual,
Tim

I'm torn by the issue having Koori blood, I tried to write of the beauty and the actual country not the issue at hand there is enough divide without dividing ourselves.

I remember a time when we celebrated side by side. But people forget the carnege went both ways. There is a story only passed down orally about such things. What the white man did in settling this country killed untold Kooris. Disease was the first enemy. There was also the other side of the coin. It seems people don't want to acknowledge that side or things today's not the day to debate it.

I drift somewhere in the middle trying to make intelligent reason of both sides. It's hard to being torn apart I see the value in both debates.

Our peoples need to come together before a date tears us apart.

I just want peace. But given the climate I can't see that happening anytime soon. It's in the interest of some in power to keep us apart.

I have first to apologise. I didn't realise who you were. My God why didn't you tell me. After my brain bleed in 2021 I still have gaps and I didn't realise. I kept looking at your face and thinking my God I know that girl.

Thanks so much for the read. God I can't believe it's you!!!

Not many know or remember..there are a lot of new faces here so it was a fresh start.

~RoseBlack~

You look amazing!! It's so good to reconnect. I knew I knew the face. It took me long enough. Everyone kept calling you Carrie and I thought the other night could it be our Carrie.

So today I put it together and I am so happy I did.
