Wolf in the Sky

Four in the morning I step out the door
The sky transparent and free of clouds
Stars up in their forever homes twinkling
Slightly diminished by light of full moon

Full as she is, she’ll make no escape
Along comes the dark wolf, his jaws are agape
I sit and I watch him devour her glow
Crescent now waning, as his umbra grows

Smaller and smaller, until she’s so thin
Her last light resembles a secretive grin
Good for the wolf, sated at last
Meals don’t come often and make escape fast

Darkness, totality, the disc is red black
Bathed in the shadow of dark wolf’s attack
Just a few moments, the stars are alive
Brighter they’ll burn if the moon can’t survive

Oh but she does for she’s toyed with the wolf
Her iron resolve much too tough for his tooth
She’s just in his maw for a moment to hide
Before she emerges from the other side

“Who’s smiling now? Keep trying old wolf.”
The crescent, now waxing, mockingly asks
“Come ‘round and I’ll feed you, it’s always been so
It’s one of my many cyclical tasks”

As I sit watching the drama play out
Gibbous, now shining near bright as before
I’m pondering time with a watery eye
Dark wolf now departed, moon full once more

but I would leave off
the [ly] on transparent, add [and] The rest is great!

I was only out just long enough to see the event at full
and then I went back inside, but it was worth the effort
to see a thing that thousands of generations have seen and
made up legends and stories about. Glad to have shared that moment
with you. ~ Geez.

Enjoyed this tale of the eclipse - well done!

Hi, Tim,
This poem describes it perfectly. The Wolf Moon, the waning, waxing, each phase is present here. So wonderful! I watched several hours and your piece brings all the drama to life again. Very cool.
Thank you!

Hati or Managarmr eats the moon and Fenrir eats the sun.

One of my daughters and her husband have belonged to a fantasy-realm group about 16 years now. It is called Ragnarok, a large community that competes with other realms in "battles", and holds wonderful celebrations based on the seasons.

Like 75% all my paternal great grandparents are first generation immigrants and moms side is half Irish too. We’re a loud angry hugging bunch on both sides. My last name Doyle or O’Dubhgaill. So that is a Gaelic word meaning dark stranger. Turns out before that the Doyles all came from Denmark. Dublin means dark settlement, and eastern Ireland was quickly forfeited to the new arrivals who founded that settlement. The Danelaw.

Ragnarok is Viking apocalypse. Wink wink.
