Superhero or Villain... [Secret Identity]...

A mask that's kept in the bathroom
is the one she wears tonight
A furious battle for your affection
the war on age is one she fights

Her ammunition is in lipstick tubes
spray-cans of scents and colors
Camouflage for worry lines
scars she's earned as a mother

Secret-agents and spies, I'm told
behind the lines of truth
keep her on her fresh painted toes
securing formulas for her youth

The little black dress is a uniform
high-heels to raise her above
those flat soled women of ordinary
in the war for your undying love

So when she's prepared for battle
and her cosmetic guns are flashin'
be aware of her woven hair
tell her, she's the height of fashion

The brilliance of her smile
and the eye-black of her lash
are for you and the whole damned world
Courtesy of your hard-earned cash

I know we don't now comment on each others work but it doesn't stop me reading you.

I had to just jump in & say this is sublime rhyming & rhythm.

Jealous!!

NB: No reply necessary. I know you'll have read my comment, that's enough.

I would say that in the majority of cultures make up is still considered a Female beauty aid. It is used to enhance beauty and disguise flaws. It draws attention to the mouth and eyes and smooths and softens the skin. These are all desirable Feminine features. Women are taught from an early age to always “look their best” .

Beautifully written!

the free will to
embroider a good tale
and deviate from the established rules of language"~Jackweb

make-up and beauty aids are a multi-billion, maybe even trillion dollar business. I do think that entirely too much emphasis is placed on looking young and beautiful for as long as possible; and when a man responds to a woman and expresses his admiration, if he does not possess enough material wealth to keep her in the life-style she wishes... She reacts to his advances as though he has leperosy; as if by accepting a compliment from his unworthy carcass, it brings her own self-worth to a new low. Men are just as guilty these days, although you might witness the fact, that many truly ugly men, both in body and soul, have enough wealth to keep a beautiful woman on his arm. Just sayin' that maybe money is the great equalizer. ~ Geezer.

did you not see the message from One (above)?

I love this poem, there is so much truth in it! how silly and gullible we are we will buy into almost anything!!! I really like this mirror being held up for us to see ourselves in! great work... I like these lines:

So when she's prepared for battle
and her cosmetic guns are flashin'
be aware of her woven hair
tell her, she's the height of fashion

Isn't erosion a bit of a bugger !!
slightly more wearing on the woman folk,
though it gets us all in the end.

(I think super hero, I'm of an age that appreciates she's still putting on a face!)

and agree. Note, there's men who aren't much better; there are those that wear toupees and corsets, spray-tans and false teeth. I guess that imagination is still the best disguise of all though; when you turn out the light, he or she can be anyone you want. ~ Geez.

I picture this well dressed lady...who is really an assassin and a good one at that. By day she is a mom and all the things that go with that but at night, her lipstick weapons are ready to fight. Excellent write and a fun read.

Join in our collaborative poem workshop. Each member will have a chance to write two stanzas at least four lines each. The stanzas must be relative to the poem.

she's a great assassin, and hidden weapons in her lipstick tubes and who knows what, or where else they are? ~ Geez.
